Here are some pictures from our 'Last Day of School Celebration' on June 17th! The Friends of the Library provided free Sno-Cones to children attending the day's events.

Lil' Folk Farm brought their traveling petting farm to the Library's lawn (thanks to a grant from the Circle of Friends Community Partnership for Children) and kids registered for the Library's Summer Reading Program. A beautiful, sunny afternoon enjoyed by all!

Please know that we have changed the date of our monthly meeting to the 2^nd Tuesday of every month. We hope you can join us next Tuesday, May 12^th at 12:30 at the library.

And remember – the Friends have partnered again with the
Upton Men’s Club for their 11^th Annual Community Auction.
This year’s event will be held on Saturday, March 28^th at the Westboro Double Tree Hotel.
Tickets are $75 per person - enjoy a delicious 4-course meal and dancing to a live band.
If you are interested in purchasing tickets to this popular event, please contact me as soon as possible.

Starting in February 2009 you can now make donations online!

Go to the Library's catalog and look for the "Donate (NEW!)" link way up in the right-hand corner of the screen. Click, then choose UPTON TOWN LIBRARY from the drop-down menu. Enter any amount, along w/your credit card info, and the donation will be processed through C/WMARS. They will send a check to The Friends of the Upton Town Library!

Change in Meeting Schedule

The Friends monthly meeting will now be held on a Tuesday afternoon, rather than a Wednesday evening as in the past.

As of January, the Friends of the Upton Town Library will hold their monthly meetings on the 1^st Tuesday of every month at 12:30 p.m. at the Library. It is our hope that this time change will allow more people to attend our meetings and become more involved in our library. So join us on Tuesday, January 6^th to learn what we have in store for 2009.

Annual Book Sale: October 4th & 5th

The Friends' Annual Book Sale will be held during Upton's Heritage Weekend

Saturday & Sunday, October 4th & 5th, 2008
9:00am - 1:00pm
both days, on the front lawn of the Upton Town Library.

Gently-used books and movies will be for sale, and there's always something for everyone! There will also be a bake sale and face painting table, courtesy of ULTRA!

And watch for our brand-new Friends of the Upton Town Library Tote Bag ~ You will definitely want to get one of these!

Please contact the Library or a Friends member if you are able to volunteer on either of those days ... there is LOTS to do!

~Donations of gently-used books and movies are now being accepted at the library~

You may drop off bags or boxes of books, in front of the book sale shelves just inside the entry of the Knowlton-Risteen Building during regular library hours.

Tracy Kane, author of the Fairy Houses Series, will be visiting Upton this Fall, to present her program entitled
"How Building Fairy Houses Connects Children with Nature"

Mark your calendars now ~ the date is set for Saturday, September 13th in the Upton State Forest, at 10:30am!

Following her presentation, which includes a reading from her popular books, families will head out onto the trails to build their own Fairy Houses. Tracy will be selling & autographing her books that day, as well.

Fancy Fairy-Attire encouraged, but not required!

(Solid footwear IS required, as you'll be walking on hiking trails to fully participate!)

There's no admission fee, however the Friends of the Upton Town Library will gratefully accept donations to continue to offer free family literacy programs in the future.

New Library Hours, starting in July

Due to town-wide budget reductions for fiscal year 2009, and the failure of a prop 2 1/2 override proposal, the Upton Town Library must reduce its hours of operation from 40 to 38 hours per week.
We will be closing 2 hours earlier on Friday afternoons.

Starting July 1st, 2008 our new hours are:
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday: 10am-8pm
Friday and Saturday: 10am-2pm
Sunday and Monday closed.

If you have any questions about our change in hours of operation or other effects of the town budget reductions on library services, please contact Matthew Bachtold, library director.

As part of the 2008 Summer Reading Program, the Upton Town Library will have lots of FREE coupons for you, donated from various museums and attractions from all over the state. The coupons offer discounted admissions to many fun places, like Southwick's Zoo and Davis' Farmland.

The coupons will be available beginning on June 10th, the first day to register for this year's Summer Library Adventure, "Wild Reads at your Library," and will be available until the End-of-Summer Celebration on Saturday, August 16th.

Wild Reads at your library is sponsored by your local Massachusetts library, the Massachusetts Regional Library Systems, and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

A HUGE THANK YOU goes to Linda Kirstein, Judy McGee, Diane Dunster and the FULTI Board (Erin, Laura, Chris & Holly) for all of their hard work! (You'll see what I mean when you get your copy!) Help the Friends support the Museum Pass Program at the Library! Be sure to notice 'The Book Nook' in the entryway to the Library building. All the items on these shelves are donated, and are FOR SALE! Hardcover books and DVD's are $2, softcover books and VHS tapes are $1 and all children's books are 2/$1! This fundraising effort, along with the ever-popular ANNUAL FALL BOOK SALE, supports the Library's Museum Pass Program.
